How to Talk Parents Into Getting a Cell Phone

All your friends have one, and all their friends have one and you're the only person without your own cell phone. So you may want to know if there's a way to talk your parents into buying you your own cell phone.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Prove to them you're responsible enough for one. Obey their rules, avoid talking back and do your chores. This is your ammunition so when you talk to them you have proof that your behavior is responsible.

  2. Step 2

Offer to pay for the phone or a portion of the phone yourself. This can take the "not enough money" argument off the table. You can also offer to pay for a portion of the bill each month.

  3. Step 3

Explain to your parents why you need a cell phone. "So you can talk to your friends" isn't a good reason. Explain that you'll use it to check in with your parents, in emergency situations, if you need a ride after a school event or for other reasons. If possible, remind them of an incident that would've been more manageable if you'd had a cell phone.

  4. Step 4

Sit down in a mature way to talk to your parents. Schedule an appointment with them so they're not busy trying to pay bills or watch TV. Listen to what they say and avoid yelling, cursing or mouthing off to them during the conversation.

  5. Step 5

Set rules and limitations. Agree that you won't use your phone in class, while driving or past a certain time at night. Promise not to go over your minutes or you'll pay the difference. Agree that if you break your parents' rules, they can take your phone away.

  6. Step 6

Accept their answer. If they say no, ask when you can revisit this topic. If they say you need to pull your grades up, pull your grades up and then ask again.
