How to Deal With a Bad Substitute Teacher

When your teacher is out sick, on maternity leave, or out with a personal day, you may encounter a bad substitute teacher. Many times schools utilize student teachers or stay at home mothers to substitute for educators. Sometimes the person filling in does not handle situations in the same way as the regular classroom teacher.

1. Help the substitute teacher out. This may be the single best advice for dealing with a bad substitute teacher. If the person filling in does not know how to handle the schedule, homework or correcting, be sure to take the time to help her out and make her feel comfortable.

2. Jot down the routine for the substitute teacher if he still cannot figure out how to handle the classroom. Be sure to include times for recess, lunch and class periods to help him organize the day.

3. Go to your principal if your substitute is bad with the students. If the substitute does not support and help the students, talking to your principal may help remedy the situation.

4. Suggest to the bad substitute teacher to go online to look for webquests for the students to take part in. Many times the bad substitute teachers are not aware of how to get the children to be actively engaged with the subject matter, so help your substitute out and show her online webquests.

5. Encourage your bad substitute teacher to play games with the class to review for tests and quizzes. Explain to him how your regular classroom teacher motivates students.
