It's usually flattering to be asked out by a man or a woman, but there are instances where you need to graciously refuse a date. It is possible to refuse your potential date without seeming cold or causing hurt feelings.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Be honest. It helps if the reason for refusing the date is not specific to the person. If you are seeing someone else or have already made plans for that time, don't be afraid to say so.

  2. Step 2

Decide if you would like the person to ask you out again. If so, you should proceed by giving them an explanation as to why you can't make it and suggest a possible option for a date at a later time. If you do not want to ever go out on a date with this person, it is best to give them a firm response on the first try. This prevents them from trying again later.

  3. Step 3

Use kindness to soften the blow. If you are permanently refusing a date with someone, it is perfectly acceptable to tell him that you are simply not interested, but you are flattered he asked. Beating around the bush or making up lies only means he might ask you out again if he is persistent or bad at judging body language.

  4. Step 4

Speak to her with respect and good manners. You can be firm with someone without being rude. Thank her for the offer and be genuine in your appreciation. If you would like a date in the future, it is important that you make a good impression so that you seem approachable when she asks again.
