How to Use Excel's REPT Function

Use Excel's REPT function to repeat words, letters or characters in a single cell or in many cells. Make Excel resemble a bar graph by entering a simple function into the cell. Or repeat the contents of multiple cells into another cell as a total using the Excel REPT function.

Create a Bar Graph Inside a Cell

  • Navigate to the cell in which you want to project a bar graph and enter "=REPT(I, number_of_times)."

  • Translate "number_of_times" to however many times you count your variable. This is how long your bar graph is in the cell.

  • Press "Enter" and the repeating "Is" appears in the cell as a bar graph.

Repeat Words or Characters

  • Navigate to a cell and enter "=REPT(text, number_of_times)."

  • Translate "text" to the word, letter or character you would like to repeat. You can enter the text directly into the equation, or you can enter a cell value for "text" containing a word, letter or character to repeat.

  • Change "number_of_times" to however many times you want the text to repeat.

  • Press "Enter" and your repeating text appears in the cell.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use an 8-point Arial font to format the cell so the "Is" resembles a bar instead of individual cells.
