A bull hitch is so-named for its use in tying a rope to a bull’s nose ring and is also known as the Piwich knot. It is similar to the cow hitch that many people already know but adds an attachment for stability and resistance to wiggling.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Tie a bull hitch to a ring “on the bight." This technique has the advantage of not requiring either end of rope.

  2. Step 2

Form a bight of rope and push it through the ring. Bring the bight over the ring and down to the ends of rope to form the familiar cow hitch.

  3. Step 3

Pull the bight of rope to get some slack and form another loop with it. Make a half-twist with the loop, bring it over the ring and push the ring completely through it.

  4. Step 4

Bring the loop with a half-twist just below the ring and dress it by ensuring that the twist forms a neat cross. Alternatively, you could also tuck both ends of the rope through this loop if you have access to them. Tighten the bull hitch by pulling the ring with one hand and both ends of the rope with the other hand.

  5. Step 5

Make a bull hitch in the bight. Perform the previous steps without the ring and keep the two loops that would go around the ring large enough to accommodate the post. Slip the post through the loops and tighten as before.
