Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Realize that the default folder isn't always "My Documents" for all Microsoft Word documents. This is where most people will search for documents if an auto recovery process happens or the save button is clicked accidentally.
Step2
Open Microsoft Word with a new document or choose an existing window containing a Word document.
Step3
Click on "Tools" on the top menu bar and wait for the dropdown menu to open and find "Options." Often shortened versions of dropdown menus appear, showing only recently used options. If this happens, hover over the arrows at the bottom of the dropdown menu until the full menu appears. "Options" is located at the bottom of the dropdown menu; click on it.
Step4
Search for the tab "File Locations" in the new window that comes up. There will be a screen with 11 or so tabs on the top of it. Clicking on the different tabs changes the screen and the position of the tabs. Find the "File Locations" tab and click on it.
Step5
Choose a specific file type such as documents. Other options include templates and auto recovery files. This will change where all documents that fall under this type are automatically saved to, but as with all documents, a file can be saved anywhere and this can be overridden by going through searching and selecting folders manually.
Step6
Select the "Modify" button and browse through the folders until the preferred one is on the screen. Click "Ok" which will close out the window and bring back the "Options" window. If another type of file needs to have a different default folder, highlight the other type and repeat the steps. Click "Ok" again to confirm your choices.
