How to Receive a High Enema

A high enema is a series of enemas that completely cleanses the colon up to the small intestine. Over time the sides of the colon get coated with bacteria and feces. This bacteria causes illness from headaches and fatigue to colds and polyps.

Things You’ll Need:

• Towel
• Partner
• Lubricant
• Bulb enema
• Bag enema

1. Find a position and area to do the high enema that is comfortable for you. Positions vary from person to person. To begin, lay on your back with your feet and rear elevated. The high enema process takes about 1 hour, so find a place where you won't be interrupted. Beds and couches are often used for the high enema.
2. Lay a towel down underneath you and get into position. The towel protects the surface from any leakage from the high enema.
3. Ask your partner to lubricate your rectum and massage with his finger to loosen the area. Most enema nozzles are small but they slide in easier when lubricated.
4. Take 8 ounces of enema solution and hold it for 2 to 3 minutes. This enema loosens up any feces in the lower part of your colon. Release the enema in the toilet.
5. Lubricate the rectum again and get into a comfortable position. Take 1 quart of an enema solution and hold for 5 minutes. Ask your partner massage your colon counter clockwise while taking the enema and clockwise while releasing it. If you began to have a bowel movement, ask your partner to slow the flow and change positions. Release the enema.
6. Get into position and lubricate the rectum one more time. Receive a 2 quart enema and hold it for 10 to 15 minutes. Massage and reposition yourself as needed as in Step 5. Release the enema.

Tips & Warnings

• Retention nozzles and plugs are available online and in drug stores for people who have difficulty holding the enema.
• More than one high enema might be necessary to clean the colon. Wait at least 2 days between high enemas.
