Linux has always been an operating system that on a small scale has rivaled Microsoft Windows. Although the users of Linux have a number of slightly different implementations available the basics of the Linux operating system is the same. Knoppix is a version of Linux that will run directly from the CDROM, DVD drive or USB stick but not from the computer's hard disk.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Download a disk image from any of the sites available on the Internet. The image is an .iso file and the download is free to all. This disk image holds the operating system. Burn this image to a CD or DVD before installation can begin.

  2. Step 2

Use a utility program to burn the image file to a disk. Nero and Roxio are probably the best-known burning programs but others are available. Find these by searching for CDROM/DVD burning utilities.

  3. Step 3

Place the newly burned image disk in the drive and restart the computer. When the computer boots, you will be prompted if you want to start Knoppix. Press enter and wait for Knoppix Linux to load into the computers memory. Be patient, this process may take up to five minutes, depending on the speed of your computer.

  4. Step 4

Locate the K in the bottom left of the screen and click it. This will bring up a start menu similar to Windows. Select an application program and away you go.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not install this to your computer's hard disk. This version will run from either from a CDROM/DVD disk or from a USB memory stick.
