How to Dress Formally for a School Dance

Whether you're going to the prom, the homecoming dance or any other formal school dance, the big question is always what to wear. The following tips will help both guys and girls decide how to dress formally for a school dance.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose a long ball gown for more formal dances, such as the prom. If you're going to a semi-formal dance, you could wear either a long, formal gown or a shorter dress that's a little less formal.

  2. Step 2

Consider the season when you're deciding on your dress. For example, if you're going to a formal dance in the spring, you may want to choose a lighter, more summery formal dress.

  3. Step 3

Talk to your date about what she's wearing to get an idea of how formal her dress will be. If she's wearing a long, formal gown for example, you should consider renting a tuxedo for the dance. If she's wearing a shorter, summery dress, you may want to wear a sports coat and tie instead.

  4. Step 4

Compare notes with your friends to find out what they're wearing. If you find out that all of your friends have long gowns, you may not want to be the only one in a short gown. Likewise for the guys, if your friends are all wearing tuxes, it's probably a good idea for you to rent one too.

Tips & Warnings
  • While it is helpful to consider what your friends are wearing and how formal the dance is when choosing your outfit, it's equally important to choose something that you love so that you feel confident when strutting your stuff around the dance floor.
