Things You'll Need:
- '70s music
- Enthusiastic volunteers who don't mind looking silly
- '70s decor in mod colors
- '70s clothes
- Disco ball
- '70s food
-
Step 1
Excite parents, faculty and students by promoting the carnival weeks in advance. Play '70s music in the cafeteria, get the Principal to dress up like John Travolta and have a contest to give the carnival an official '70s name.
-
Step 2
Organize a committee to decorate the hallways. Smiley faces, movie posters, vinyl albums and lava lamps all make great '70s decor. Try to borrow some store mannequins and dress them in hip hugger jeans, lots of beads and platform shoes.
-
Step 3
Illustrate the historical events of the decade by drawing an enormous time line down the school halls. Teachers can use it as a teaching tool, but at the same time, it builds momentum for your event.
-
Step 4
Encourage your volunteer workers to dress in the clothes of the '70s during the carnival. Some of them may even have their 70s threads. Anybody still have a Farrah haircut?
-
Step 5
Arrange for local dance instructors to give a '70s dance demonstration a couple of hours into the big event. Find a shimmering disco ball and let them show the crowd how to "Hustle" and do the "Night Fever Line Dance" from Saturday Night Fever. Keep Abba and Bee Gees music blaring all light long to encourage other dancers. You can even have a dance content where contestants pay to enter.
-
Step 6
Play games based on '70s TV and movie trivia. Ask questions about "Charlie's Angels," "Rocky," "Welcome Back Kotter" and "Star Wars." Give donated prizes to the winners.
-
Step 7
Sell '70s food such as quiche, Chex party mix and hamburger helper. If you want to get a little fancy, have a fondue café.
