How to Conduct a Proper Flag Disposal Ceremony
The American flag is a symbol of a united country and represents the ideals of justice, freedom and democracy. Men and women have fought and died for Old Glory and the right to practice these ideals. Conduct a proper flag disposal ceremony to respect and honor the flag when it is no longer serviceable.

1
Conduct a proper flag disposal ceremony by contacting the American Legion for help.
-
2
Begin the ceremony with an assembly of American Legion members in a special formation opposite a small fire. This ceremony should take place outdoors in the evening.
-
-
3
Present the flags to officers for inspection. The Sergeant-at-Arms presents the flags to the First and Second Vice Commanders, and then to the Commander of the post.
-
4
Explain how the flags served the country and why they are now unserviceable. The Sergeant-at-Arms will give further explanations and will recommend proper and honorable disposal of the flags.
-
5
Speak to the membership about the American ideals these flags represent. The Post Commander then pays an oral tribute to the flags and calls for the flags' destruction by burning.
-
6
Ask the Chaplain to offer a prayer to bless this event, and give thanks to God for our country and the flag that stands for freedom. The Color Guard then presents arms and post members salute.
-
7
Dip the flags in kerosene and place them on a rack over the fire as the bugler plays "To The Colors."
