"Keep it simple, stupid." That of course is the old saying and it couldn't be simpler when it comes to naming a sports bar. The name should be short and to the point. It should be easy to say and roll off the tongue. It should contain no more than three words, and the second and third words should probably be "sports bar." (Pub is another great alternative.)

Ponder the history of the sports bar. Since sports bars are a neighborhood thing, think if you can generate any nostalgia by calling on a memory. For instance if the bar was founded 100 years ago and everyone knew the owner, naming it after him will make everyone feel comfortable. As if their old friend is still around.

Use the English language when it comes to your sports bar. Save the fancy French name for the bistro down the street. One variation, which is also popular, is to name it with British sounding words. Since the British have a social drinking culture and often visit a pub, people will feel a connection to America's European ancestors. It gives the sports bar a spot of class as well. An example would be "The Harp and Hound Pub." (Of course, that does break the three-word rule, but if you stumble upon something that catchy, go with it.)

Scout other names of sports bars in the area. Make sure that the name isn't too much like any of your competition around the corner. Keep it fresh and keep it unique.

Pick your name and go with it. Once you have a name, test it out with a few family and friends. Ask people who you know go to sports bars often. After making your final decision, don't waste any time. The truth is, people will come to your bar because of access to the big game, reasonably priced drinks and decent bar food. The name at a place like this is secondary to the experience.
