Crocheting in a spiral can be an easy, attractive part of many yarn projects. Spirals can take the form of bowls, tubes or flats. Bowl shaped spirals are commonly used in projects such as hats, stuffed animals or baskets.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yarn
  • Crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  1. Step 1

Chain five single crochet (sc) stitches. Join the chain and form a ring by inserting the hook through both loops of the first stitch and making a slip stitch.

  2. Step 2

Work 12 single crochet (sc) around the loop. Work the stitches in the center of the ring, not into individual stitches of the chain.

  3. Step 3

Work two single crochets (sc) in each of the single crochet (sc) in round two. Continue working stitches around the loop.

  4. Step 4

Adjust the number of stitches in the first round as needed to account for the size of your yarn. If your bowl is too wide, opt to work fewer extra stitches.

  5. Step 5

Work a pattern of two single crochets (sc) in the next two stitches of the previous round, then one single crochet (sc) in then next stitch, and continue alternating. Continue to add more rounds until your spiral is at the desired size.

  6. Step 6

Track crochet rounds by using a marker, such as a safety pin, attached at the start of each round. Move the marker to start of the new round.

  7. Step 7

Finish off with a slip knot if you are ending your project with the tube spiral. Cut the yarn 2 to 3 inches from the slip knot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a yarn needle to weave the trailing end into the tube so it isn't visible.
