Shorthand is used to accurately and quickly record notes, meeting minutes and directions. Teeline shorthand is the easiest form of shorthand to learn and use. You'll need a formal course of instruction with daily practice to learn this technique.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take notes in Teeline shorthand using a reporter's notebook with lined pages. Use a finely sharpened lead pencil or a good pen with a thin nib. The pencil or pen should glide smoothly over the paper.

  2. Step 2

Draw a margin on the left side of the paper that is 2 or 3 inches wide. Make your Teeline outlines in this margin. Use the remaining right side of the page to transcribe your Teeline shorthand into longhand.

  3. Step 3

Use symbols (called outlines) for each letter of the alphabet. Each outline is a shortened or core version of the cursive form of the letter with unnecessary strokes stripped away.

  4. Step 4

Eliminate vowels from the word you are writing. An exception is when the first and last letters of the word are vowels.

  5. Step 5

Remove unnecessary letters from words to increase the speed with which you write. Ignore silent letters. Represent common prefixes, suffixes and letter pairings (such as "sh" or "ing") as single symbols.

  6. Step 6

Practice Teeline shorthand exercises every day for at least 20 to 30 minutes per day. Daily practice is essential if you wish to become proficient in Teeline or any other shorthand method.

  7. Step 7

Strive to attain a speed of between 80 and 120 words per minute. Some Teeline shorthand experts can write at a top speed of 140 words per minute.
