A double-line passing drill is a basketball drill in which players can practice both passing and defending techniques. It is similar to playing a game of keep-away, as offensive players try to pass the ball to each other while a player defends.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Split the participants into two groups and have them line up on opposite sides of the court. Have one player stand in the middle, in-between the two first people in line. He should be about 10 feet from both people.

  2. Step 2

Have the first player in one of the lines pass the ball to the first person in the other line. The player in the middle should act as a defender and try to block or intercept the pass.

  3. Step 3

Instruct the middle player to move to the end of one of the lines after one pass attempt. The player who was the passer should to move the middle. The player who had the ball passed to her should then attempt a pass to the first person in the other line, with the middle player defending.

  4. Step 4

Continue play this way until each player has had an adequate amount of time practicing both passing and defending.

Tips & Warnings
  • Encourage players to practice pump-fake passing moves to try to get the ball past the defender. This is a great drill in which to prefect these kinds of moves, as a defender who knows the player is going to pass, will be more difficult to defend against than one in a game situation.
