Step 1
Measure the space you have set aside for your ferret cage before you shop for it. Larger is better (a bigger cage means a happier ferret), but it obviously needs to fit in the space you have. A ferret should have an absolute minimum of 3 feet by 2 feet of space in his cage, and more if you can manage it.
-
Step 2
Examine the material of the cages. You want to shop for cages that have bars or wire mesh, rather than ones with solid sides like an aquarium. Ferrets need lots of air and ventilation to be happy.
-
Step 3
Test the strength of both the cage bars and the locks on the cage door. Ferrets are very clever and will find ways to get out if you let them. The welds on the cage bars should all be extremely sturdy and the lock should click closed and/or require a key to open.
-
Step 4
Look for cages that have multiple levels or that are divided into different locations. Ferrets don't like to eat or sleep in the same place where they defecate, and a cage with divisions makes it easier for them to do that.
-
Step 5
Consider the cleaning options for your ferret cage. Ferret cages need to be cleaned fairly often, and a cage made of resilient materials will make that task easier. You might also consider a cage with a pull-out tray in the floor, which will let you clean it without undue fuss.
-
Step 6
Evaluate cages with "fun" options like crawl tubes or built-in nesting places. Ferrets are naturally curious and love to move around in interesting places, which tunnels or similar add-ons can provide.
-
Step 7
Shop online at sites like Ferret Depot and Cages by Design to take advantage of competitive prices on ferret cages (see Resources below). Since these types of companies do not have brick-and-mortar stores where they must stock ferret cages, they can pass the savings on to you.
