Step 1
Get a Reader Identification Card if you want to be able to access the Library's reading room. You must be 18 years old and have a valid government identification card in order to gain entry. Realize that you will not be able to take items out of the library unless you are on the staff of certain government officials.
-
Step 2
Learn about the wide variety of materials available to you in the Library of Congress. In addition to the printed collection, you can also search for sound and visual material.
-
Step 3
Search the Library of Congress online through its website (see Resources below). You have a choice between a basic search where you enter keywords and a guided search that allows to you make selections using a pull-down menu.
-
Step 4
Use search limits to help narrow down your results. Restricting returns by date, language or publication location can help you conduct your research faster.
-
Step 5
Write down the call number of search results that interest you and aren't available for viewing online. In addition to the number, note the reading room and building where you need to request the item for viewing. Remember that you'll have to make an appointment to view visual material such as movies.
-
Step 6
Pay attention to copyright issues whenever you use an image, quote or sound clip from the Library of Congress. While many items are considered in the public domain, some aren't. If their use isn't cleared before you use them in your research, it could lead to legal issues.
