How to Select Asian Wedding Favors

Choosing the right favors for an Asian wedding will depend upon the specific country to be represented, and the various traditions of each region. Your plans may also vary if the bride and groom are not of Asian heritage, but simply wish to bring an Asian theme to the ceremony.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hold a meeting with the wedding party to determine the theme of the ceremony and reception, and the level of tradition that will be honored according to the specific Asian region. For instance, the traditions and customs for a Japanese wedding will be very different than that of a Laotian wedding, and the wedding favors should be as specific as possible in order to satisfy the sensibility of older or more traditional guests.

  2. Step 2

Select wedding favors for a Japanese ceremony by choosing gifts that are appropriate to that culture. For instance, chopsticks made from porcelain or colorful hand-held fans may be treasured by your Japanese guests. Having the bride and groom's name written in Japanese characters on rice paper may also be a unique and memorable way to remember the ceremony.

  3. Step 3

Choose Chinese-themed wedding favors to honor Chinese wedding guests. For instance, fortune cookies with custom messages from the bride and groom may be a particularly fun way to thank your guests for attending the ceremony and reception. Chinese paper lanterns and small gift boxes filled with Chinese teas may also be a thoughtful way to honor your friends and loved ones.

  4. Step 4

Do not mix traditions from different countries when you select Asian wedding favors. It might show a lack of sensitivity to your Asian guests if you confuse Japanese traditions with Chinese traditions, unless the bride and groom come from different backgrounds. Even if the wedding party is not Asian and chooses this theme for aesthetic reasons, you still risk offending Asian guests by offering favors that are generic or vague.

  5. Step 5

Use online resources such as WeddingFavorstoLove.com and Japaneseweddingfavors.com for beautiful Asian themed wedding keepsakes (see Resources below).

Tips & Warnings
  • When selecting wedding favors with a Southeast Asian theme, you may want to venture outside the norm and choose French-influenced gifts, such as chocolates filled with cognac, to reflect the history of countries such as Vietnam and Laos.
