For some people, the hardest part of moving to a new neighborhood is making a good first impression. All of us want to be liked and we want to get off on the right foot; but doing it is often a very difficult challenge. Here are a few ideas that will help you make a good first impression which hopefully will lead to developing good friends.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Be aware that personal appearance counts a lot. If you are dressed appropriately, not only will others gravitate to you but you will have more self confidence.

  2. Step 2

Make good eye contact and greet the other person with a smile, because people generally like others who are enthusiastic and upbeat. Demonstrate your ability to easily relate to others and your new neighbors will beat a path to your door.

  3. Step 3

Offer a firm handshake. More relationships have ended before they began when a limp handshake is offered. No one wants to be greeted that way, and it says a lot about one's personality. It's about the only tactile way to tell that person you are glad to meet them.

  4. Step 4

Speak up and enunciate clearly. It indicates self confidence and people will be more at ease meeting you because of it.

  5. Step 5

Use vocabulary that reveals your communication skills and ability to interface with people, especially people you've not met before. The words you choose will indicate your education and training.

  6. Step 6

Be careful of your non-verbal communication, because it sometimes conveys a stronger message than verbal communication. For example, when you slouch, whether you’re sitting or standing, you are saying volumes about you and your confidence level. Sit up straight; and, when you stand make yourself as tall as possible with shoulders back and head held high.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some neighbors are comfortable with their circle of friends and they are interested in meeting you only because you have recently moved in. It is basically a sign of weakness, so simply move on to other, more interesting people.
