How to Study for the Series 7

The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, the largest independent regulator of securities firms doing business in the United States, administers the "General Securities Representative - (Series 7)" exam. It consists, according to the FINRA website, of 250 multiple choice questions — 125 questions for each of two sections. Those taking the exam have three hours in which to complete each part.

On its website, FINRA provides a study guide: "Content Outline for the General Securities Registered Representative Examination (Test Series 7)"

  • Visit the FINRA website and, under "Most Viewed," click on "FINRA Registration and Examination Requirements." Scroll about halfway down the page and click on "General Securities Representative - (Series 7)" to access the pdf version of the study guide provided by FINRA.

  • Read through the FINRA study guide. Do not worry about or get hung up on topics you do not understand in the first reading.

  • Work straight through the study guide provided by your employing financial services firm, a guide that you have purchased, or both.

  • Answer sample questions. The FINRA guide includes a short series of "Model Questions" at the end. More comprehensive sample exams are provided in many study guides available for purchase. Note the questions for which you did not know the correct answer and research the topic of each.

  • Repeat the cycle of studying, taking a sample test and identifying problem areas as often as necessary until you are confident that you have mastered the material.
