Step 1
Decide whether you want an upright vacuum with a filter bag, or a bagless model. With a bagless model, you will be handling the dirt from the vacuum and you will have to clean the filter every time you empty the dirt compartment. Vacuums with filter bags are definitely more convenient to operate than bagless designs.
-
Step 2
Decide whether a self-propelled model is worth the extra cost. Find a local store where you can try out vacuums to see if a self-propelled model is what you want.
-
Step 3
Choose an upright vacuum with the most power in your price range, for the type of vacuum you have singled out in the first two steps. Do a hands-on inspection of all the vacuums that meet your specifications to see how easy it is to change filter bags or empty collection bins, attach and remove accessories, change ride height and change handle positions.
-
Step 4
Write down brand names and model numbers of your final choices of upright vacuums and shop for the lowest price in local discount stores, online merchants or vacuum specialty stores.
