Before each an every run you must be sure to stretch. But the biggest mistake people make is they stretch cold muscles. This is very counter productive!!! Be sure to warm up with light jogging, jumping jacks etc. Once you feel your muscles are warm (for me its usually a mile warm up) then you can proceed to stretch. Make sure not to neglect any muscles groups. Calves, quads, hamstrings, you abdomen or "core",shoulders, chest, back, and even arms. Trust me it is all very important.
Step2
After stretching I usually start my drills. Which are a series of, jumps, skips, strides, lunges. This is usually necessary for sprinting, but if you are just running for fun, or to stay/get in shape this can be forgone.
Step3
Im sure everyone knows "how to run" quickly move you feet! But some tips to help are, control your breathing. I cannot stress how much this can help with endurance. Before running, take note of your breathing pattern. When running don't change it. FYI Olympic 400m runners breath as if they are walking down the street, and 100m meeter runners might take one breathe if that the entire race. Short breathes or panting can throw your entire running flow out of whack.
Step4
After your desired run, be sure to cool down. Your muscles don't respond well to abruptness. So a nice cool down will cut down on the soreness to be expected the next morning.
