Your spouse keeps telling you that you have too much stuff. Do you really have too much stuff or is (s)he just too fussy? Here are some ways to tell if your stuff is getting overwhelming.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • time to think about your behavior
  • ability to analyze your situation

Step1
Overflowing shelves Would you like a bigger house than you now have? Probably that's because you have too much stuff. Are the shelves overflowing? Do you keep adding more and more storage units?
Step2
Are you an American? It is likely that you have too much stuff.
Step3
Is shopping a hobby for you? Is it something you do to fill the time or to boost your spirits? If so, then you definitely have too much stuff.
Step4
Have you lived in the same place for more than 5 years? Then you are likely to have accumulated a lot of things that are no longer useful to you. Are you afraid to open the closet doors for fear of things cascading down on you? You have too much stuff.
Step5
Do you wish you had help keeping the place tidy and clean? Less stuff would make it easier to maintain your space. If you wish you could hire a maid, then you have too much stuff to comfortably care for it.
Step6
Have you had to rent storage space or ask relatives to store things for you? You have too much stuff.
Step7
Is it hard to make ends meet? Are your credit cards charged to the max? Probably you have too much stuff.
Step8
If you're reading this article, then deep down, you know that you have too much stuff.

on 3/24/2008 No I don't want a bigger house. Yes I like to browse garage sales. But I don't dare get rid on anything, I'll sure as heck want or need it next month. Gail

on 4/28/2008 Ah, Gail, I think that's a key thought... "I'll need it someday." Fear of scarcity or of doing without, often triggers us to keep too much stuff.
