Creating an independent film is an exciting and laborious adventure. Often the plan for distribution is formed after the film is completed. Reverse the process and plan distribution before you embark on your project. It will place your project in an advantageous position. Here is how to create a strong plan for distributing your film.

  1. Step 1

    Determine whether your film is best for home DVD distribution, educational or theatrical.

  2. Step 2

    Research the distribution history of films that are similar to your project. Create a spreadsheet to keep track of the distributor, executive producer and release date.

  3. Step 3

    Visit the websites of distributors and check whether they handle your genre.

  4. Step 4

    Assess the company. Know what questions you need to ask.

  5. Step 5

    Contact the acquisitions or development department. Make your pitch. Use concise language that relates to the company’s style.

on 6/4/2008 It would be nice if you could offer more information. Like where to go to find the history of specific videos distribution. Where and who are the distributors, and where a list can be found, maybe with a link. What question to ask. ETC. thanks for posting the article.
