You have to fit the saddle to both the horse and yourself. It depends on what type of saddle you want to ride. There are many different types of saddles - English, Western, Australian, and there are many others.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • The horse you wish to fit the saddle to, and measurements of yourself or the rider to whom you wish to fit the saddle.

Step1
Measure the horse. How tall is the horse? How wide is it's whither? Gaited horses are generally thinner in nature than other horses. How wide is the horse in the middle of it's back? Take these measurements with you to a saddle maker, or place where you intend to buy the saddle.
Step2
How big a seat do you need? Measure your inseam, and consider your weight. Make sure the stirrups are long enough or short enough for your height.
Step3
What will you be using the saddle for? Will you be showing the horse? You would want a fancier saddle than if you were riding on the trail for pleasure.
