Recipes often call for the addition of alcohol in the dish, dessert, or side dish. However, if you aren't comfortable with adding alcoholic beverages to your recipe, try these simple substitutions.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Items most people have in their refrigerator or pantry.
Step1
In place of 1 cup of wine or beer in your recipe, use 1 cup nonalcoholic wine or beer.
Step2
Instead of 1 Tablespoon of rum or liqueur, substitute 1 teaspoon rum extract or liqueur extract + 2 teaspoons of water.
Step3
Substitute 1 Tablespoon of coffee for 1 Tablespoon of coffee-flavored liqueur.
Step4
Instead of 1 Tablespoon orange-flavored liqueur, use 1 Tablespoon orange juice + 1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest.
Step5
Use 1 Tablespoon apple juice for 1 Tablespoon sherry or Madeira.

Tips & Warnings

  • Liqueur extracts can be found in the spice aisles of several supermarkets.
  • Don't automatically disregard a recipe if it lists an alcoholic ingredient.
