Cats with claws just love to scratch on furniture
Cats with claws just love to scratch on furniture

Cats just love to stick their claws into the side of your expensive furniture. With every pierce you can just feel the fabric shredding apart. This is natural for cats that have claws. They do this because they have nothing else to sink their claws into. That is where you come in!

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Squirt bottle full of water.
  • Catnip
  • A scratching pad for cats
  1. Step 1

Buy a cat scratching pad. This is different than a scratching post. They are available at your local pet store.

  2. Step 2

Lay the scratching pad on the floor at home and sprinkle catnip on it. This is sending an invitation to your cat that this is not off limits to him.

  3. Step 3

Spray you cat with the spray bottle, on high stream every time your cat even looks like he is going to scratch your furniture. Include a firm "NO" along with it.

  4. Step 4

Praise your cat when he does use the new scratching mat. Before long your cat will just use the mat and nothing else.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sprinkle catnip on the mat every couple of days.
  • Keep the scratching mat in a general area where the cat would normally scratch.
