Not only are home baked gifts more personal than store bought ones, but they're easier on your wallet, too. Here is how to share home baked gifts with your friends, around the holidays or any time of year.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Recipes for baked goods
  • Plastic wrap, colored if you can find it (it's more festive)
  • Ribbon
  • Decorative tins
  • Jars
  • Shipping materials
  1. Step 1

Decide what kind of gifts you'd like to give. Popular home baked gifts include cookies, homemade fudge, biscotti banana bread. Some people prefer to give a mix of dry ingredients for a favorite recipe, along with baking instructions.

  2. Step 2

Consider putting together a savory coffee, tea, hot chocolate or spice mix and putting it in a jar for your friends and family to use at their leisure.

  3. Step 3

Try to pick recipes that you can make before your schedule gets booked with holiday obligations. If you can, choose items that can be frozen or stored for weeks or months.

  4. Step 4

Bake your gifts or assemble the mixes. Wrap cookies and candy in plastic wrap, tie with a festive ribbon and place carefully in a decorative tin. Cakes and breads can actually be gift wrapped or packaged with cloth napkins or festive towels, as long as you wrap them with plastic wrap or aluminum foil first. Place mixes in a large, wide mouthed jar and seal.

  5. Step 5

Choose wisely if you are shipping your gifts-—don't ship anything that could leak, spill or melt. Crisp cookies, drop and bar cookies and most candies travel well. Frosted or filled cookies tend to stick to each other or to the wrapping, so it's best to avoid them.

  6. Step 6

Pack the goods well: Use a sturdy cardboard box lined with bubble wrap. Use a lot of filler such as tissue paper, additional bubble wrap, foam or plastic bags to cushion your home-baked gifts so they'll arrive safely. Layer the heaviest baked items toward the bottom. Tape the box shut and mark the box as fragile.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you're mailing your items, be sure to send them out soon after they've been baked so they'll arrive fresh. Just make sure they've cooled completely first.
  • Don't give perishable items as gifts. Your recipient should be able to enjoy your gift after the holiday is over.
