Hand sewing is relaxing and stress-free when you know how to quickly knot thread. Here is how to do it.

From Quick Guide: Learn to Sew
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Needle
  • Needle threader (optional)
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Cut a length of approximately 24 inches of thread.

  2. Step 2

Thread the needle. For double-thickness sewing, bring the two ends of the thread even to each other. For single-thickness sewing, leave one end short and loose.

  3. Step 3

Grasp the end of the thread between your thumb and first finger and loop the thread around your finger twice.

  4. Step 4

Using your thumb, roll the thread off the end of your finger. The loops of thread should roll over each other, locking together.

  5. Step 5

Use your thumbnail and fingernail to pull down the newly formed knot and tighten it. You are ready to begin sewing.

Tips & Warnings
  • Looping the thread around your finger too many times will result in a large, messy knot. Wrap it twice.
