When one is looking for a horse, sometime size is important.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Measuring tape or stick
  • horse
Step1
Decide on the size of horse you want. Suppose you want a tall horse.
Step2
Understand how horse measuring works. Horses are measured by "hands" which are noted by "hh." 16hh would be a horse that is 16x4 inches high. (64 inches = 5 feet 4 inches) if the size has a . near it add that number of inches. 16.3hh is 16hh + 3 inches.
Step3
Measure the horse on a flat plane from the front hoof up to his withers or base of the neck. Look at the hooves, if they are too long, they might show the horse as an inch or two taller than he/she really is.
Step4
Measuring is done with a tape or stick that can be picked up at any feed store or Equine product store.
Step5
Buy your horse when you find the right size.

Tips & Warnings

  • Owning a tall horse is a blast. I constantly get comments while riding.
  • Remember, a young horse may grow on you. My five year old grew an additional 4 inches by the time he was seven. He is now 17.3hh.
