Okay all of my training, knowledge and experience tells me that you should not attempt combing out dread locks. However if you insist on trying to comb out dread locks read on and best of luck to you.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • conditioner
  • Large tooth comb
  • Patience
  • Hair cutting Scissors
  • Oil
  1. Step 1

Start by sitting down somewhere you will be comfortable for the next couple days. Possibly in front of a television, or near family so that at least you get some good picture opportunities.

  2. Step 2

Work on one dread at a time. Starting in the front of the head.

  3. Step 3

Apply conditioner to all of the dread locks to give the hair moisture

  4. Step 4

Apply oil to lubricate the hair and help it loosen the dreads.

  5. Step 5

Cut the end off of the dread

  6. Step 6

    Work oil into the hair

  7. Step 7

Using a wide tooth comb begin loosening the ends of the hair out of the dread shape.

  8. Step 8

Keep going taking small sections to loosen at a time

  9. Step 9

    Repeat until complete

Tips & Warnings
  • Use hair oil
  • You will lose some hair
  • You will need to maintain the hair through treatments and conditioning, light styling for several months to get it back to a healthy condition.
  • Work small sections
  • Re-condition as needed
  • Re-apply oil as needed
  • Work carefully not using to much tension on the hair to remove it from the dread
  • Nothing replaces a professionals advice, seek one out that you trust to get you through this time

on 11/17/2008 Hi Schrlau,

Have you tried the Take Down Remover Cream for matted hair and dreadlocks. I saw it on the internet. They have a whole system for removal of dredlocks and natural hair after care. It seems like it might save a whole lot of time. They claim to save your hair too. There are dredlock pictures on their website and some testimonials of some people.

I know it will probably take time to remove dreds anyway so I guess watching TV or a movie is a great idea.

Thanks for the info.
