Step 1
Start by driving around the areas that you find inviting. You may want to start with areas near your home. You may want to start with areas near schools that you know are good, or that your children are attending. You may want to start near the home of relatives or close friends. While driving, be sure to record the names of neighborhoods and subdivisions that attract you.

Step 2
Amass sales and rental information. If you are looking to buy a home, take a sales flier from each home that provides one for the public. This will help you get an idea of what the neighborhood has to offer, and the prevailing price range. This will also help you eliminate an area that you can't afford. If you are renting, write down phone numbers on rental signs and call the owners. Write down the size of the unit, how many rooms and bedrooms are included and what amenities are available.

Step 3
Once you know exactly where you want to live, check the newspaper and Internet listings.

Step 4
Drive through the neighborhoods at night. Once you have narrowed down where you want to live and are at the point of making final decisions, drive through the neighborhoods at later hours. This will give you a good idea of how people maintain their property after work. It will let you know if there are a lot of children out playing after school. It will also alert you to dangerous activity.
