How to Finally Make a Commitment to Get Into Shape

As a Sales Consultant for some major health clubs for over 8 years, I used to sell more memberships in January than at any other time of the year. Why January? Quite simply, among all the resolutions made around the New Year, starting a workout program ranks near the top of the list for many people. Unfortunately, a good percentage of those ambitious folks quit on that resolution by February. Let me tell you how you can convince yourself to make the commitment, stick with it and actually see results.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Step 1: Pick a Specific Goal- Everyone already knows that, in order to be healthy, they need to exercise. That’s obvious and hardly the proper motivation most people need to finally make the commitment. No, you need a specific goal to shoot for so you can experience the glorious thrill of success when you achieve it. It doesn’t matter what you decide upon as your goal. Whatever it is, just make sure it’s realistic and has a time limit on it. A good example would be “I want to lose a dress size in two months”
Step2
Step 2: Enlist a Friend- Studies have shown that people who work out together have a much higher success rate than those who choose to go it alone. Exercising with a friend can be motivating, fun and invigorating. You can encourage each other and you are less likely to miss a workout session if you’ve already made plans with someone else and don’t wish to let them down.
Step3
Step 3: It’s All About the Schedule- In order to reap the benefits of your exercise, you will need to utilize the gym 3-5 times a week. Take an honest look at your life and decide when you are able to make time for yourself. Look, everybody is busy....chart out specific days and times when you can go. Take into account your own personal preferences. Are you more of an Early Riser? A Night Owl? Find a way to fit gym time in.
Step4
Step 4: Find the Right Gym For You- This a whole topic that I will be covering at some point soon. However, for now, make sure the gym’s location is convenient for you, it is well maintained and the staff seems friendly and accessible. Don’t sign up for a gym in whose environment you feel uncomfortable. Take a look around when you tour them and ask yourself “Can I see myself working out here?” Different gyms have different clienteles. If your goal is merely to get into better shape, I’d advise against going to a hardcore bodybuilding gym or any other establishment that intimidates you.
Step5
Step 5: Personal Training is The Way to Go- Once you’ve plunked down your hard earned money for a membership, your objective should be to get the most out of the experience that you can. Most gyms offer a free Fitness Assessment with a Personal Trainer. Take advantage of this. Then, inquire about purchasing a package of sessions. A qualified Personal Trainer can show you exercises you never thought of doing, can give you advice on your diet and eating habits and will motivate you to achieve your goals. Don’t belabor the expense. You are making an investment in Yourself and Your Health.
Step6
Step 6: Keep a Journal- Write down all the exercises you do at the gym so that you can chart your progress. You will be amazed at how much fun going to the gym can be when you are properly organized and know exactly what you will be doing on any given day. Keeping a Journal will help you maximize your time and effort and will lead you to your Fitness goals before you know it.

on 4/1/2008 Crystal,
Thanks for writing.

It's hard because everyone is busy, but people can find 30 minutes three times a week to devote to their health. It's a matter of prioritizing and finding what works best for you. If they have to get up an hour earlier to fit it in before work, so be it. There's ALWAYS time somewhere.

Regarding cost, people need to look at their budgets and find places to sacrifice for the sake of their healthy. A decent dinner at a restaurant can cost at least $30. A movie (with snacks) can cost $15 or more. If they cut out one movie and one dinner per month, their already most of the way towards paying the membership.

As I said, it's all a matter of priorities.
