How to Make a Dog Costume from a T-Shirt

Dogs don't generally like dressing up, but they do it to please their owners.

You need a dog costume and you need it now. No time for ordering online or running down to the pet store and hoping they have something in Rover's size. It's short notice, money is tight and your dog has no patience for silk and lace. Sometimes you just have to cave in to pressure from kids, neighbors, dog groups or other folks who want that dog dressed up and ready to step out. You can get that pup ready for Halloween, a local parade or a child's party with this quick custom costume that is cheap, fun and disposable.

Things You'll Need

  • T-shirt
  • Scissors
  • Permanent markers
  • Tape measure
  • Glitter pens, fake flower, big buttons, bows (optional)
  • Finger paint (optional)
  • Child-sized foam visor (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Try a small t-shirt on your dog. The dog's head goes through the neck and its front feet go through the sleeves. If the shirt fits a little baggy, that is exactly the right size. Take the shirt off the dog.

    • 2

Cut the sleeves out of the T-shirt with the scissors. Ragged is fine. No binding or stitching is needed. Also cut away the belly so that your dog can walk easily and do the piddle chores.

    • 3

Make a small cut at the neck if the shirt does not fit easily over your dog's head so the shirt goes on smoothly. You do not want to injure your dog's ears or eyes by squeezing a tight shirt over its head.

    • 4

Put the pattern side so it shows on the dog's back. Otherwise you can decorate a white T-shirt with glitter pens, fake flowers, big buttons, a lacy edge or other gaudy features.

    • 5

Turn your dog into an autograph hound. Use the permanent marker to sign or print names on the back and sides of the shirt. If you have children, let them write their names on the shirt in black or assorted colors, or let them put hand prints on the shirt with finger paint.

    • 6

Measure your dog around the chest at the widest point if you are going to purchase a T-shirt for this purpose. This is the minimum size T-shirt that you can buy, but larger is better because it will go on and off the dog more easily. Shop for a colorful cheap shirt and cut out the sleeves and belly.

    • 7

Add a child's foam visor if your dog is patient. Dress your dog up just before the event and use lots of treats to keep your canine happy. If you feel really adventurous, make a matching T-shirt for the dog escort.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not put too many things on your dog, the dog will be impaired and will not like the fuss.

  • If your dog panics or struggles in the shirt, take it off.
