Clip Your Cat's Nails

Clipping your cat's nails can be a trying task. I used to avoid clipping my furbaby's nails until absolutely necessary because I would inevitably end up bleeding and agitated. Now, with some preparation and a few simple steps, my cat's claws are kept short and neat, and I don't bleed at the end of the ordeal. Follow these simple steps to make your life easier, keep your cat happier and take the pain and suffering out of cutting your furry friend's nails.

Things You'll Need

  • Cat
  • Towel
  • Nail Clippers (people type)
  • Treats (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Have a towel laying flat on your bed, couch or whatever surface is near the area where you plan to do the deed.

    • 2

Keep the nail clippers (human variety) in hand or pocket, ready to use once you catch your cat.

    • 3

Try to lure your cat with treats or soothing touches. Chasing him or her around the house is no way to calm him or her down enough to actually capture then clip.

    • 4

Wrap the cat up in the blanket like you are swaddling a baby, keeping one paw out of the blanket- clip these nails first. Don't forget to pet and verbally reassure him/her with "kitty talk."

    • 5

Using the people nail clippers (they cut much more neatly than the kitty nail clippers, which tend to splinter your cat's nails), cut each nail at a slight angle being careful not to clip too close to the blood supply in the nail (you can tell by the distinct white versus pink part of the nail).

    • 6

Once you clip all nails on one paw, ease the paw into the towel and free one non-clipped paw. Continue the same steps for each paw.

    • 7

Once you finish your cat will probably want out pronto! Make sure to stay out of his or her way because he/she might be a little angry. Speak to him/her in a soothing manner and consider rewarding him/her for allowing you to complete the job. This will help ease his/her fears for the next nail clipping opportunity that arises.

Guess I just heard about at Pet Supply Plus? It's like Lee nails for your cat but it encases their claws. Hmmm. Great tips. I need to try those on my dog too. Thanks.
