If you are tired of buying expensive ethernet (CatV, CatVe, etc.) cables and you use them often, this is perfect for you! Make your own and save money! This can also be done to fix broken cables! The necessary tools can be picked up online or at computer supply stores.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Bulk Cat5 cable
  • RJ-45 plugs (can be purchased in packs of 50 for less than $10)
  • Crimper/cutter tool

Step1
Strip the ethernet casing so you expose the 8 colored wires beneath. You will want to strip about 1 inch of the casing. DO NOT strip the colored wires.
Step2
The colored wires need to be aligned properly. For a standard cable used for internet connections, order in this fashion from left to right: white/orange, orange, white/green, blue, white/blue, green, white/brown, brown.
Step3
Clip the wires so they are all straight.
Step4
Insert the wires into the RJ-45 plug. If you are looking at the bottom of the plug, the colors should be the same as in step 2 from left to right. Make sure to insert it into the plug with moderate muscle. If the wires aren't touching the end of the plug, the cable will not work.
Step5
Insert the plug into the crimper. Use some muscle here, as you will want to secure the plug so the wires do not move.
Step6
Repeat steps 1-5 for the other side of the cable.
