make your computer startup faster

Speed up the time it takes to restart your computer! By only allowing necessary programs to start with the computer, you save valuable time and resources!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • PC with Windows XP or Vista
  • Hands
  • Brain
  1. Step 1

Direct to Start (or Windows logo in the bottom right hand corner) -> Run.

  2. Step 2

Type "msconfig" in the Run window and select "OK".

  3. Step 3

Click on the startup tab in the System Configuration Utility window.

  4. Step 4

Uncheck boxes of programs you do not need to start the computer with. For example: Quicktime, MSN Messenger, etc. DO NOT uncheck needed programs such as virus scanners. Some of the program names can be confusing, so you can expand the "Location" to see where the files are located. That should give you a better idea of what the program actually is.

  5. Step 5

Press "OK". The window will close and you will be prompted to restart the computer.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you accidentally removed a needed program, just run through the steps again and re-check the necessary box.
  • DO NOT alter any of the other tabs in this window (such as SYSTEM.INI or WIN.INI), as you can damage necessary services the computer needs to run.
