From Quick Guide: Chinese New Year Holiday Tips
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • brown paperbag and glue and kite string
  • markers, crayola's or bright tempra paint
  • empty cardboard paper rolls -long like gift wrapping rolls
  • crepe paper all colors but always red, orange and yellow for sure
  • plastic packaging tape
  • scissors
  • long sheets of bulletin board paper on a roll or meat packing or newspaper companies white paper rolls

    Simple Chinese Dragon

  1. Step 1

Choose the style of dragon face you want. Animals of dragons, lions, and tigers are just a few of the choices. The traditional choice is a dragon head. Once you cut the facial features out glue in place on the brown paper bag and let dry .

  2. Step 2

Next rollout the long rolls of white paper and begin decorating scales of all colors or fur of all colors. When you are done designing begin gluing on the tall empty cardboard paper rolls for legs and hold on spots. Strategically place these so the tail slightly bends in the center. If you wish to extend it for a long distance use two or three rolls of white paper and more cardboard paper rolls to balance it.

  3. Step 3

After attaching the cardboard poles by plastic tape and is secured begin wrapping the poles with colored crepe paper all different colors.
Secure ends with tape. Now tie the kite string around each pole to anchor them and have it meet in the center for someone to hand on to while guiding the dragon in the parade. Use lots of help especially on a windy day.

  4. Step 4

Put the mask over the chosen persons head and make sure the eye holes are big enough to see. Now wear red, yellow, black or silk and make music with bells, chimes, horns etc. to announce the dragon has arrived. Weave in and out so dragon looks life-like and it is easier to carry it this way. Throw out pretend gold coins and walk through the neighborhood or street yelling "Have a Happy Chinese New Year." If you are ending a unit of teaching have fortune cookies and stir-fried rice to eat with chopsticks for a party afterwards. If it is a party with older children firecrackers are also a part of the celebration in China.

Tips & Warnings
  • Firecrackers and treats optional.
  • Can make pretend looking firecrackers with toilet paper rolls painted red and yellow tissue paper stuck in the top.
  • Adult needed or older child to wear the head.
  • Several adults needed to help children carry dragon and be safe walking.
