Teasing, back combing, French lacing, cushioning the hair are all very similar just different degrees of packing the hair into the root area to create stronger hold in the finished hairstyle. If you grew up when shampoos and sets were hot you should know how to make this work. For those of you who did not grow up when shampoos and sets were hot, well lucky you, this article may be of use.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tail Comb
  • Regular comb
  • Sectioning clips
  • Finishing brush
  • Hairspray
  1. Step 1

Section the hair so that you have control of the section to be back combed.

  2. Step 2

Spray, the hair to be back combed, with hairspray to give it texture.

  3. Step 3

Starting with small sections (approximately ½” thick and no longer than half the comb length), using the fine teeth of your comb and a scooping direction moving the comb through the hair from 2” away from scalp to the scalp.

  4. Step 4

At the scalp area press the comb firmly against the scalp packing the hair.

  5. Step 5

When the section is completed spray with hairspray & let dry

  6. Step 6

Use a finishing brush to smooth out the hair on the surface of the back combing, use a light touch.

  7. Step 7

Position hair and spray to finish

Tips & Warnings
  • A lighter touch is best to start with until you develop the technique
  • Packing the hair tighter at the scalp gives a stronger hold.
  • Some hair has to be left out of the back combing so that you smooth hair over the back combing so that it is not seen but benefited from.
  • Small sections are easier to work with
  • Section hair out of your way for control of the hair to be back combed
  • A working hairspray is best, one you can get your hands through
  • Hold the hair firmly
  • When smoothing be careful not to pull out all of the back combing, you just want to make it smooth on the surface of the hair.
