How to Tease Hair
Teasing, back-combing, French lacing, and cushioning the hair are all very similar techniques. They vary based on the degree to which the hair is packed into the root area to create a stronger hold in the finished hairstyle. Section the hair so that you have control of the section to be back-combed.

Spray the hair to be back-combed with hairspray to give it texture.

Starting with small sections (approximately 1/2-inch thick and no longer than half the comb's length), using the fine teeth of your comb and a scooping direction, move the comb through the hair from 2 inches away from the scalp towards the scalp.

At the scalp area press the comb firmly against the scalp, packing the hair.

When the section is completed, spray with hairspray and let dry.

Use a finishing brush to smooth out the hair on the surface of the back-combing, using a light touch.

Position hair and spray to finish.

Tips & Warnings
A lighter touch is best to start with until you develop the technique.
Packing the hair tighter at the scalp gives a stronger hold.
Small sections are easier to work with.
Section hair out of your way for control of the hair to be back-combed.
A working hairspray is best, one you can get your hands through.
Hold the hair firmly.
When smoothing, be careful not to pull out all of the back combing; you just want to make it smooth on the surface of the hair.
