Have you ever gone to a job interview and worried about whether or not they liked you? Did you worry about what to say and then realize that you had the perfect answer to their question when it was over? We often sit there and just wait for the interviewer to carry the interview, when in fact, we should be the ones who carry it. How? By selling yourself. Read on to learn how to sell yourself at a job interview.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Professional appearance
  • Pen and paper
Step1
Dress professionally and present yourself by walking and carrying your purse or brief case in a positive manner. Don’t rearrange your clothes or fix your hair or straighten your tie once you enter the interview room. You need to show that you are confident in how you present yourself and that your self-image is positive and content.
Step2
If you are nervous, keep a pen or pencil in your hand so that you don’t start fidgeting with your hair or clothes because that shows a lack of confidence to the interviewer.
Step3
Never answer the question immediately. Always take a second to form your answer and then speak clearly and precisely.
Step4
Answer the questions as they are asked and don’t jump ahead assuming you know what will be asked. This shows that you are not likely to be coached and apt to do things your way instead of waiting for correct instruction.
Step5
Don’t mumble the answer or make comments or comical gestures during your answers. This shows disrespect for the interviewer.
Step6
If you don’t know an answer, say you don’t know and don’t present yourself foolish by guessing.
Step7
When the opportunity arises, you can ask selective questions to the interviewer. It would be a good suggestion to have done some research on the company you are applying to prior to your interview. You should learn about the history of the company, its product or service and planned projection, so that you can know in advance what questions you want to ask. This shows initiative on your part and is most often a positive characteristic that employers look for in their new hires.
Step8
When the interview is over, thank the interviewer for their time and comment on anything that you learned about the job during the interview. Tell them you look forward to being part of their productive team and leave the room promptly.
