Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Things You’ll Need:
- Bohnanza game
- Two to five players
Step1
Get three coins ASAP. The importance of this cannot be overstated, as three coins lets you afford a third field, which allows you more options, to harvest more beans, for more money, which is more likely to lead to victory.
Step2
Make your queue work for you. The cards in your hard must be planted, in order. That means that it's worth trading for whatever type of bean is in the front of your hand, since you'll have to plant one to start your next turn anyway. Conversely, if a card is coming up that you don't want to plant, get rid of it. If you have to donate it instead of trading, so be it.
Step3
Know what's out there. Depending on the number of players in the game, there might be 24 coffee beans likely to show up in the deck, or a measly four cocoa beans. This changes the odds dramatically. Each bean lists on the card how many of them are in the deck. If no coffee beans have been harvested yet, you may as well plant, since many will be on the way. Conversely, if two cocoa beans have already gone by, think carefully before planting one, as there's only one other card in the deck that will help you.
Step4
Be an individual. Having different bean crops than everyone else will be of great benefit to you, both because you'll have less competition for your beans (and be likely to get donations), and because the beans you don't want will be more likely to find a ready home.
Step5
Don't be afraid to harvest. Yes, holding out for 10 beans might give you four coins, but if harvesting the eight you have currently gives you three coins and lets you plant the next two beans in your hand, it might be worth it.
