How to Play Bohnanza (Basic)

Looking for a good strategic multi-player game that's still easy to learn? Why not try Rio Grande's "Bohnanza," the bean-trading card game. The whole game is a single deck of cards, and it plays completely differently with different numbers of players. Read on to learn how to play the basic version of Bohnanza.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Bohnanza game
  • Two to five players
Step1
Remove the appropriate cards from the deck, based on the number of players you have, as specified in the instructions. For example, no coffee beans for four players.
Step2
Deal five cards to each player, being sure each player keeps his hand in order.
Step3
The first player plants the first bean in her hand. She may then opt to plant the second bean. After this, she flips over the top two cards of the deck. She may trade (or donate) those two cards, or any card in her hand, to any other player. Other players may only trade (or donate) any card in their hands to the active player.
Step4
If either or both of the two flipped cards are not traded away, they count as received donations. All cards received in trades (or donations) are planted, in whatever order the recipient chooses. Cards may only be planted in an empty field or a field of the same bean type.
Step5
If a bean must be planted and no field is available, the player must harvest a field. Fields with only one card cannot be harvested unless there is no other option. Each type of bean card has a payment schedule detailing how many you need for a coin (or two, three or four coins). If any coins are earned during a harvest, keep that many harvested beans face-down and the rest are discarded.
Step6
After planting the traded beans, the active player draws three cards to the back of his hand in order, then the next player takes a turn. Play continues a specified number of times through the deck. In the four-player game, the deck is gone through three times. After that, whoever has the most coins wins.

Tips & Warnings

  • Each player may buy a third bean field for three coins. This is often worth the investment, as it allows for more options.
  • Be wary that the deck is faster each time through.
