Assert Yourself With In-laws Assert Yourself With In-laws

Nothing causes headaches like in-laws! However, so many of us forget to assert ourselves when appropriate. There is a happy medium when standing up for yourself, so be sure to take the high road!

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Lay the groundwork early. If you set a precedent that you are not to be pushed around, then chances are you will gain some respect.
Step2
When suggestions are made that you whole heartedly don't agree with, then don't agree to them! Try to compromise, and if that is not possible than say no!
Step3
Give your in-laws an honest perception of yourself. If you are not religious, then don't pretend to be! If you are not a Democrat that don't fake that you agree with their political beliefs. Being a phony will only come back to haunt you later. Their son/daughter fell in love with you as you are, so be yourself.
Step4
If it is an imposition for your in-laws to stay with you then do not offer. More fighting will occur if you are in the same space, so why not offer to book them a hotel room? Everyone will be happier and sleep better and their visit will be much more pleasurable.
