Free throw shooting should be the easiest part of basketball right? The ref hands you the ball, and you take two shots with no one guarding you, how hard can it be? Harder than you think, NBA players average only 66%! Here's how to change those free throws to free points:

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • basketball
  • basketball court (you can also measure the free throw line yourself)
Step1
First, step up to the free throw line with your toes touching, lean forward ever so slightly, this puts you a little closer to the basket.
Step2
With your feet shoulder width apart, turn the basketball so that the inflation hole is pointing straight up. This sounds weird, but keep reading. Clear your mind, don't think about anything, focus on right now.
Step3
Bounce the ball slowly three times, keeping the inflation hole up. This get the blood pumping through your arms. Keep your eyes on the ball, after the 3rd bounce, concentrate hard on the inflation hole, not only does this clear your mind, but it hones in your sight on the very center, so it'll natural to do that with the basket.
Step4
Raise your arms above your head, your elbows should be 90 degrees, or close to it. Glance at the basket and imagine a long tube leading up from your arms and through the middle of the rim, then shoot it. This should only take a second! The most accurate assement you have of the basket is the moment you first see it, the more you stare, the more you start calculating for far to shoot, how high to arch it, this makes you miss.
Step5
Be sure to follow through, don't put up a shot and drop your arms, extend them all the way, your fingers should be pointing exactly where you shot the ball. You're done! It's a lot to remember, but when you put it all together it comes so easily, I shot maybe 40% or 50% before I started doing this, now I shoot 80's and 90's!

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to bend your knees, you don't jump, putting your body in motion throws you way off.
  • If you find this just too hard, try adapting it to fit the way you like, not everyone's the same.
