Instructions

1. Begin by organizing your ideas. Make a few notes. Use this set of cues: describe, compare, associate, analyze, apply, argue. I'll explain each.

2. Describe the issue. Provide references to the source or other bloggers who have commented.

3. Compare the issue. How is it different or similar to other issues that have been discussed or occurred in the past?

4. Associate the issue with other events or ideas that seem related.

5. Apply the issue to current events or knowledge, so that its implications become clear.

6. The final step is the most important. Now that you've built up your position, give your opinion. Argue for or against the topic. Take a stand and give the reasons to back up your opinion. If you've done a good job building up to this step, the reasons for your position should relate to the information you've previously given.
