Step 1
One of the best things you can do to lessen that damage is to brush from the bottom up. Brushing your hair from the bottom up helps to reduce breakage. When you brush your hair from the top down, you're having to attempt to pull your brush through any knots you have to get to the bottom. This is a major cause of hair breakage. If you start at the bottom and work your way up, you can slowly work through the knots and put less stress on your hair.

Step 2
To make brushing long hair easier, separate your hair into sections. This is most easily done by separating your hair into two sections, one on either side of your head. Brush each side independently, than combine the two pieces back together and brush again. Now that you have all of the knots out you will be able to easily pull your brush through your hair from top to bottom.

Step 3
Make sure that you are using a high quality brush. The best type of brush to use on your hair, long or short, is a natural bristle brush. These brushes are a little more expensive than other brushes, but they are well worth the money. They cause less breakage to your hair and also benefit it by pulling the natural oils from your scalp down to the ends of your hair. This helps to keep the ends of your hair moisturized.

Step 4
Long hair is best brushed when it is fully dry, but many people do find the need to comb out their hair while it is still wet. If you must comb your hair while it is wet you should always use what is called a "wet comb" or a pick. Both of these have tines that are widely spaced apart and reduce breakage of your hair. You should never use a brush or a fine tooth comb on wet hair.

Step 5
The most important thing to remember when trying to brush long hair is to be patient. If you get bad tangles and knots, slowly working to get them out will reduce the amount of damage your hair suffers from and will keep your hair looking healthy and beautiful.
