Step 1
Research which stones are "hard stones." While precious gems such as emeralds are beautiful, they are very soft stones and can scratch easily.

Step 2
Ceylon sapphireWhen choosing a color, think about your skin tone. If you are fair with pink undertones, a ceylon sapphire is a beautiful choice. The light blue stone is both hard and complimentary to fair coloring. If you have more olive tones, the traditional dark blue sapphire will probably look better on you.

Step 3
Choose a band that accents your personality. Many designers can do very creative etchings or can add precious stones to your band to make it pop.

Step 4
If you want side stones research what colors will not subtract from your center stone. You might even want the traditional diamonds on the side.

Step 5
You have more metal options than you realize. Gold, white gold, and rose gold all change the look of your ring dramatically. Think outside the box.
