The primary care physician is the person who will work with other specialists, as needed, and coordinate all of your health care. The type of primary health care physician you choose depends on your personal needs.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

    Types of Primary Care Physicians

  1. Step 1

Internal medicine. These doctors provide for the complete care of teenagers through seniors.

  2. Step 2

Family medicine. These doctors provide comprehensive medical care to all family members, including newborns.

  3. Step 3

Obstetrician/gynecologist. These physicians often serve as primary health care doctors for women. They also perform routine physicals and health screenings.

  4. Step 4

Pediatricians. These doctors are experts in primary care for children, beginning in infancy. Some also specialize in adolescent medicine.

  5. Step 5

Geriatric physician. These doctors specialize in the care of the elderly.

  6. How To Choose Your Primary Care Physician

  7. Step 1

Make a list of priorities that are important to you. For example, do you want a physician that practices by himself or would you prefer a group practice?

  8. Step 2

Look for a doctor who is board certified and trained in one of the specific fields. Determine what hospital the doctor uses to treat patients.

  9. Step 3

Ask friends for referrals. Remember, not all doctors to whom you are referred will necessarily be accepting new patients or your health insurance plan.

  10. Step 4

Learn the location of the doctor's office and his hours. He should be conveniently located to either your home or office.

  11. Step 5

Good communication is key. See if the doctor takes the time to listen to you. Ask yourself if you comfortable are with her.

  12. Step 6

Check the doctor's support staff. Are they courteous, organized, polite and helpful? Will they provide easy access to the doctor when needed?

  13. Step 7

You need to find out if the doctor will accept your insurance plan.

  14. Step 8

Ask about the doctor's fees, payment schedules and options. Determine how far in advance you need to make an appointment and how long the wait is in the doctor's office once you have arrived for your appointment.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are part of a managed care plan, you can get a list of doctors that participate in your plan.
