In the past few years, cell phones have transformed from a luxury to a necessity for most people. And since most people keep one phone for the length of their contract (usually 2 years), they grow sort of attached to it and consider it an important accessory. Since it's something that you always have on you, your cell phone should say something about you as a person. And while the initial selection of the phone is important, you can continue to personalize your phone after you leave the store.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Decide on a unique ringtone. You can have one ringtone for everyone who calls, or multiple ringtones to assign to certain people in your contact list. Either way, you want to have something that's instantly recognizable when your phone rings. Most phones come pre-loaded with generic ringtones, but if you don't mind spending a little money, there are thousands of additional options available in every genre. Start by checking your carrier's website. Every carrier has a library of ringtones that you can download onto your phone. If you're having trouble finding exactly what you want, try an Internet search for ringtones. Be careful, though--ringtones downloaded off the Internet won't work with every carrier or on every phone. Be sure that your cell phone and service are compatible before downloading ringtones off the Internet.
Step2
Put music on your cell phone that your callers can hear instead of a regular ring when they call you. This add-on usually costs extra--it's a monthly subscription, and the songs cost about the same as a ringtone--but it's another way of making your phone uniquely yours. Depending on the carrier, they're called "ringback tones" or "answer tones." You can download any song you'd like, and your callers will hear the music you've selected whenever they call you.
Step3
Set a background or wallpaper for your phone's screen. This can reflect your personality and make your phone unmistakably yours. Most cell phones come preloaded with generic wallpapers. For a small fee, you can download additional wallpaper from your carrier's website or from the Internet. Just like with ringtones, though, if you download wallpaper from a source other than your carrier's website, double-check to make sure it's compatible with your phone and your service. If your cell phone has a camera on it, you can snap a photo and set that as your wallpaper. This option is usually free and creates a background for your phone that's uniquely you. Take a picture of yourself, your friends, family, significant other, pet, favorite location...anything at all, and you'll see it whenever you use your phone.
Step4
Check out a cell phone accessory store or kiosk for cosmetic enhancements for your phone. Phone "tattoos," charms, skins, and straps are all available to make the outside of your phone as unique as the inside.

Tips & Warnings

  • Opt for the safer adhesives and skins to change the appearance of your cell phone, rather than getting a new faceplate. Faceplate changes alter the phone so much that in many cases it invalidates your warranty on your phone. Be sure to check with your cell phone carrier before making any drastic changes to your cell phone's appearance.
  • If you are under 18, you'll need your parents' permission to download anything onto your phone that costs money.
