Although Mystery Shopping sounds like a easy job, it takes allot of planning and detail. Companies are seeking workers that can shop and accurately portray potential customers. I would like to share with you a few things that will allow you to be successful as a Mystery Shopper.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Determination to succeed.
Step1
First you must find a good company. Before singing up with a business, check them out http://welcome.bbb.org. There are allot of scams out there, protect yourself and do research before participating in a program.
Step2
The company's will notify you if they have jobs in your area through your email. So make sure you check your email frequently. The faster you answer you email the more jobs you will get.
Step3
Be very specific when filling out your paper work. Usually the company requires that you complete a questionnaire on the service that you received. The Mystery Shopping business will give you specific direction, so you must follow these without any misdirection. You will not be able to bring your paperwork in with you, so keep your eyes open and try to remember detail.
Step4
Know what the job is going to cost you before you take it. Some of the jobs require that you make purchases and it is important to know the dollar amount associated with these purchases since it will be awhile before you are reimbursed. I prefer to pick job were the purchase is minimal, but it really just depends on your financial situation.
Step5
Know how much you are going to be paid. Some jobs only pay reimbursement, while others pay anywhere between five and a hundred dollars depending upon the assignment. Before you take the job, know how much you are going to be paid and determine if the job is worth it. When the job only pays reimbursement sometimes it's only worth it when there is a purchase you would like to make, like a new necklace or grocery' s. This will keep you from being disappointed.
Step6
Know the schedule of payment. This will keep you in the know and will make you look more of a unprofessional. Some businesses take two week and some take other six weeks to process a check.
Step7
Keep good records and make sure you keep records separate if you are working for multiple business. You will need to keep track of all your passwords and copy of your receipts. This way if needed you can back up you work. This record is also handy if you need to report this information for tax-purposes.
Step8
Keep your answers simple and honest because your answers could affect another person's job. Remember to you are there to report not just to give your opinion.
Step9
I can not stress enough you must read the directions for the job and then read them again. This may be time consuming, but if you do not do it right you may not get paid.

on 3/15/2008 Great article. I would recommend Jancyn for mystery shopping. They are very reputable and supply me with mystery shops - even in a moderately small town.

on 3/15/2008 This is an interesting article. I have been tempted to check into doing some mystery shopping in the past, but was always fearful of hoaxes. Checking the Better Business Bureau for information on the company offering this type of employment is an excellent idea!
